Azerbaijan Detains 37 Over Hijab Protest
The Azerbaijani government's decision to enforce standardized school uniforms, which paves the way for an unofficial ban on the hijab, has sparked widespread protests and complaints from students barred from entering their classrooms due to their head coverings. The Ministry of Interior announced the detention of 37 individuals following clashes and damages that occurred during the protests, reflecting a debate over the balance between secularism and religious freedom in a Muslim country that adopts a secular system. The implementation of government directives has led to some students being denied access to schools and to solidarity protests by students and parents. Authorities emphasize that these rules aim to maintain a unified and neutral educational environment, while opponents argue that they restrict religious freedom, posing both legal and moral challenges to protecting students' right to practice their faith.
