Defense Minister reviews post-UNIFIL plans
Lebanese Minister of National Defense, Michel Mneisi, discussed with UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and the relevant government officials, the proposed solutions for the post-mandate phase of the UNIFIL forces in Lebanon, which is set to end at the end of this year. The meeting addressed the current situation in Lebanon, particularly developments in the south, and also touched on the issue of extending UNIFIL's mandate to ensure continued international support, maintain stability, and strengthen regional security, thereby preserving Lebanon's sovereignty. Minister Mneisi emphasized the importance of avoiding a security vacuum in the south and indicated that the most appropriate solution is to extend UNIFIL's mandate until an alternative arrangement is agreed upon, one that guarantees the continuity of its missions and the balance of international support. He also underlined that any future mission should be under UN auspices to maintain regional stability.
