Traveler's Hymns to the Lower Cities
The essay deals with the subject of exploring a personal journey across multiple cities and countries. The author describes their experience of moving from a distant village to cities such as Beirut, Erbil, Dresden, and Prague, focusing on the changes in identity, language, and memory that the journey leaves behind. The text discusses how travel transforms a person and immerses them in memories and feelings that never fade. It expresses the deep sadness and sense of loss that accompanies alienation, including the loss of names and small possessions that give us a sense of belonging. The ending offers philosophical reflections on the fading of identity and place—that after leaving, a person loses everything, even their name, becoming merely a body moving between cities, aware that the true answer about the place is that "no one knows where it is."
