Erdogan May Seek New Term as Elections Likely
A advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has stated that Turkey is likely to hold early elections in 2028, possibly in March or April, instead of the scheduled date in May. This could enable Erdoğan to run for president again, despite the maximum of two presidential terms. This announcement comes amid efforts to amend the constitution to allow for early elections, provided the parliament approves with a two-thirds majority, as the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its allies control 331 of the 600 seats. The aim of these amendments is to give Erdoğan an opportunity to run again before his current term ends.
