Tokyo's Funding of US Chip Plants
Global Foundries announces the operation of two new electronic chip manufacturing facilities in New York, funded by Japan with an initial value of up to $10 billion. This is part of a trade agreement between Tokyo and Washington that links investment to the removal of trade restrictions. Construction is expected to begin before the end of 2026, with production starting in 2029. Future expansions could increase investments to $21 billion. The project focuses on technology transfer and operations management, while Japan provides the funding. Both parties stand to gain strategically and financially, as the agreement includes sharing cash flows and benefiting from reduced trade tariffs to boost export capabilities.
