Single women needed for foreign service
The Naharnet article reveals a marital status requirement imposed on women for joining the Lebanese diplomatic service. This rule stems from a law enacted in 1971, which mandates that female applicants must be single due to transportation and residence considerations. The report highlights that this condition constitutes discrimination against women and conflicts with the Lebanese Constitution and international agreements, such as International Labour Organization Convention No. 111, which affirms the principle of equality in access to public employment. Women's Rights Deputy, Ainyah Ezzedine, has proposed a bill to annul this requirement. The bill is currently under review by the Ministry of Administration and Justice, with a strong likelihood of its approval, aiming to eliminate discrimination and restore equal opportunities for women in diplomatic careers.
