Financial Times: France protests expose government weakness
The article in the Financial Times highlights the fragility of France's ruling authorities, as revealed by the current protests. The demonstrations, which drew between 550,000 and 800,000 participants and were marked by acts of violence and rioting, demonstrate that the government is losing control of the situation—especially as public anger over rising prices and declining purchasing power grows. The previous model of containing protests through massive financial measures is no longer possible, as the French treasury is depleted, reflecting deep social issues and the authorities' inability to address them. The protests have also exposed the weakening of President Emmanuel Macron’s prestige and threaten France’s international reputation, as they erupted in opposition to the rising cost of living and escalated with acts of violence—threatening citizens’ trust and the economic sector.
