Sunni deputies oppose amnesty law amendments
The Constitutional Council in Lebanon attempted to impose its interpretations of the general amnesty law in a manner that exceeded its authority, considering that such actions threaten the powers of the Parliament and rely on binding interpretations outside its jurisdiction. The Supreme Judiciary unofficially suspended the implementation of the circular issued by the Public Prosecutor General to enforce the law, emphasizing that public prosecutors will abide by the law as approved by Parliament regardless of the Constitutional Council’s decisions, and have prepared a circular to standardize application. The Constitutional Council’s overreach of its authority sparked widespread controversy, with deputies viewing it as a mockery of the law that endangers the rights of detainees, while the Prime Minister and the General Prosecutor supported the decision not to comply.
