Security Council assesses UNIFIL alternatives
The United Nations Security Council is holding a closed consultation session to discuss the UN Secretary-General’s report on the implementation of Resolution 1559 in Lebanon, with expectations of discussing alternative solutions for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) after its mandate ends at the end of the year. There are concerns about the possibility of a UN withdrawal without an alternative monitoring mechanism to oversee the Blue Line and prevent military escalation between Lebanon and Israel. International sources clarified that the upcoming phase is crucial in determining the nature of the international presence in southern Lebanon, amid fears of renewed tensions in the absence of an independent international body to monitor violations. The French-Italian initiative to establish a multi-national force remains under discussion, as tensions and challenges regarding the region's security future continue.
