Regional crises' impact on expat remittances
The Gulf disturbances are no longer merely a regional issue limited to the area; they now have a direct impact on Lebanon's economy, mainly through the remittances of expatriates which are a primary source of income for Lebanese families. It is estimated that these remittances will reach around $6.3 billion by 2025, accounting for approximately 30% of the gross domestic product and covering more than half of the trade deficit. These transfers are significantly affected by the economic and political deterioration in Gulf countries, which threatens the stability of the livelihoods of millions of Lebanese people and increases the fragility of the economic model that relies heavily on foreign funds. Meanwhile, investment is waning, and the future of reforms remains uncertain amid political and security instability.
