Air Travel Faces Stagnation and Security Concerns
The airline activity at Beirut International Airport is experiencing a significant decline, with traffic being nearly halted due to escalating security concerns and regional tensions. This is especially true with the increasing likelihood of internal security developments and fears of rising violence and clashes. The President of the Tour Operators and Travel Agencies Syndicate explained that current flight traffic is among the lowest in 20 years, with bookings for Christmas and New Year's holidays falling below 60%, and at the mercy of security developments—particularly concerns about explosions, armed incidents, or tunnel digging. This comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Iran and warnings of a possible escalation between Lebanon and Israel, further complicating travel and increasing the country's security and economic worries.
