Sisi Announces Construction of 200,000 Rental Homes in Egypt
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi directed the government and the "Hayya Masr" (December 2017) Fund to establish 200,000 rental housing units aimed at reinforcing the role of renting in meeting citizens' housing needs, within the framework of population reforms and efforts to combat the crisis of informal settlements and unplanned construction. This announcement was made during the Egypt 2026 Forum, where investment projects totaling 11 trillion Egyptian pounds were unveiled, including developments in cities such as North of New Cities, Alexandria, and the North Coast. Sisi emphasized the importance of private sector participation and cost-sharing in construction, highlighting the need to reconsider housing patterns and bridge the gap between homeownership and the demand for public housing, especially in light of the ongoing debate over the old rent law. He also reaffirmed the commitment to implementing the "Decent Life" initiative projects by 2030 to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development.
