Aoun Assures Jabal Souq Gharb Stability
The article details the Battle of Souk el-Gharb during the Mountain War in 1983. It highlights that the Lebanese Army commander at the time, Brigadier General Michel Aoun, assured President Amin Gemayel during a meeting that he would not allow the Souk el-Gharb front to be breached and that it would not fall as long as those responsible for it were alive. Despite this, accounts vary regarding the stability of the front. For instance, the late Foreign Minister Abdallah Bouhabib mentions in his memoirs that Aoun confirmed the front would not fall, while another narrative suggests that President Gemayel was living in the Baabda Palace and was worried about the town's fall. Documents and eyewitness testimonies indicate that Aoun insisted the front remained steadfast during the battles, and that this was one of his most significant achievements in his defensive strategy.
