Melhem Khalaf Calls for UNIFIL Extension to Protect Lebanon
MP Malham Khalaf warns of the dangers of UNIFIL forces withdrawing and the UN umbrella being lifted from Lebanon, especially given the Lebanese army's inability to take over 33 sites along the Blue Line from UNIFIL due to the ongoing Israeli occupation of these locations. He considers that implementing Resolution 2790, which requires Israel's withdrawal and the handover of these sites, is currently impossible, thus necessitating a reassessment of the resolution and continued extension of UNIFIL’s mandate until the last moment. He emphasizes that a withdrawal of UNIFIL could fully expose Lebanon to confront the occupation, while UNIFIL remains a key stabilizing factor in the south, connecting the besieged villages with the Lebanese interior.
