Pakistan Army spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry expressed “cautious optimism” about his country’s mediation between Iran and the United States. He said that Army Chief Asim Munir’s two visits to Tehran this month reflected positive momentum in the talks, despite efforts by some parties to obstruct them. Chaudhry said the mutual defense agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey does not preclude new countries—including Iran—from joining. He added that sending additional Pakistani troops to Saudi Arabia would depend on how the situation develops and on decisions by the two countries’ leaderships, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to defending the Kingdom and the holy sites.
