Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s former shah, received the “Freedom Award” from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Frankfurt, amid a crowd that German police estimated at around 18,000. Speaking at the ceremony at St. Paul’s Church, he said Iranians were being denied the right to practice democracy. He said he was accepting the award temporarily, until a democratically elected government was formed, and pledged to return it to its rightful owners in Tehran.
