American prisoner declines life-ending measures after 50 years
The state of Florida in the United States carried out the death sentence against Harold Gene Lucas, who had spent nearly 50 years on death row after being convicted of murdering a 16-year-old girl in 1976. Lucas had shot the victim, a girl he knew and her family, following a dispute, and the case culminated in the final death sentence after Lucas withdrew his last appeals, expressing his exhaustion from the long wait. This marks the fourteenth execution in Florida in 2026, which records the highest number of executions among U.S. states, and concludes a long case that began with a murder and went through multiple phases of sentencing and retrials.
