The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution calling for the replacement of the traditional Mercator map, which distorts the sizes of geographic regions, with the "Earth Equal" map that preserves the true proportions of the continents' areas. The goal is to correct the unbalanced image of the world, particularly to provide an accurate depiction of the size of Africa and the African region, fostering a more just understanding of distances and geographic weights. Although the resolution is not legally binding, it may lead to changes in educational curricula, digital maps, and technological applications to promote a genuine awareness of the size and prominence of the Global South. The initiative, led by Togo and supported by the African Union, received backing from 164 countries, while the United States opposed it, and six countries abstained from voting.
