Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion and world No. 3, exited the US Open tennis tournament in the quarterfinals after losing to American Ben Shelton, ranked eighth, in a marathon match that lasted four hours and 28 minutes. Shelton won the encounter in a decisive fifth set after Alcaraz had taken an early lead and set the pace, ending his streak of 18 consecutive wins in major tournaments. Shelton remains on track to reach the semifinals to face his compatriot Frances Tiafoe, who defeated Alex Mikhlin, boosting the United States' chances of capturing the men's title for the first time since 2003.
