Sixteen elderly people have died and another ten were injured in a fire at a care home in Aracanía, Chile, located 640 kilometers south of Santiago. Firefighting teams managed to bring the fire under control, and cleanup operations are ongoing. Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident and rule out any criminal suspicion. The care home had previously faced operational violations since 2019, resulting in enforcement measures and fines. Chilean President José Antonio Kast has called for an investigation and urgent measures to review the conditions of elderly care homes across the country.
