US-Canada trade talks break down
The trade negotiations between the United States and Canada broke down due to disagreements over the proposed agreement's terms, particularly regarding tariffs and Canada's allowance to strengthen its trade relations with other countries. Ottawa refused to limit its ability to enter into independent trade agreements and rejected including cars and trucks in the customs exemptions, which led to its withdrawal from the negotiations. The disagreements escalated following America's imposition of a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth approximately $20 billion, with Canada retaliating with countermeasures. Tensions in the trade relationship between the two countries continue to persist.
