Reconstructing the Saudi Narrative
The article discusses the importance of collecting and preserving the national history and memory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in a comprehensive and balanced manner. It emphasizes reviving the voice of the local community and its personal sources, alongside external sources, with the goal of constructing an authentic Saudi narrative that does not rely solely on a single story or an external perspective. It clarifies that most of the history we know has been shaped by Europeans, Orientalists, travelers, and journalists. Therefore, enhancing community participation in documenting its stories and testimonies is essential so that the Kingdom’s image does not diminish to just what others say, especially before the oil era, which was characterized by deep commercial, social, and cultural ties. The article affirms that building a national memory is a collective responsibility that requires efforts from institutions and individuals, as well as the use of modern digital tools to ensure the sustainability of the sources and facilitate access to historical materials. This way, stories and events are preserved from being forgotten and become a legacy for future generations.
