The United States is studying the imposition of an additional 7.5% customs duty on Chinese goods, which would raise the total tariffs to around 20%, ahead of the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on September 24. This move is part of Trump's efforts to strengthen protectionist policies amid negotiations to extend the trade truce set to end on November 10, and investigations into China's surplus in industrial production capacity, despite legal challenges and opposition from Beijing, which warned of retaliatory measures. The step could lead to a trade escalation between the two countries and impact economic relations, accompanied by declines in the dollar index and increases in oil and gold prices.
