A new study has found that an experimental nasal spray, based on extracellular vesicles derived from the amniotic membrane surrounding the fetus, may help reduce some effects associated with Alzheimer's disease. The results showed that delivering the vesicles to the hippocampus region of the brain, which is a key area involved in memory and affected by the disease, helped decrease neuroinflammation and improve microglial cell activity. This led to enhanced cognitive performance and reduced deterioration in animal models. The experiments also demonstrated a protective effect on human neurons derived from stem cells from Alzheimer's patients. The findings emphasize that the treatment targets the surrounding cellular environment of neurons, not just known disease-related proteins. This research represents a step toward developing new therapies focused on neuroinflammation, although clinical application is still under investigation.
