Children's fitness drops after elementary school
A Norwegian study reveals that children's aerobic fitness declines significantly between fifth and sixth grade, especially when measured Relative to body weight or lean body mass, despite stable absolute oxygen consumption capacity. The results showed a decrease of approximately 5.7 ml per kilogram of lean body mass. This decline is linked to body growth and weight changes during this age period, with school interventions not clearly preventing the downward trend. The study emphasizes that growth and the transformations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic may be contributing factors to this decline in fitness.
