Saudi Arabia's nuclear future backed by 110 million tons of uranium
Saudi Arabia announces the discovery of massive reserves of uranium and rare earth elements in the Medina region, estimated at approximately 110 million tons of ore. This discovery strengthens the Kingdom's ambitions to develop an independent peaceful nuclear program. The goal is to achieve self-sufficiency in nuclear fuel production and to support the national atomic energy project by building reactors for electricity generation and localizing small reactor technologies, making the extracted uranium the foundation of the Kingdom's future clean energy. The discovery is based on the ancient geological formations of Jebel Sai'id, offering a competitive advantage through chemical processing, as the Kingdom produces abundant sulfuric acid from its oil industry, facilitating an economical uranium separation process. The Minister emphasizes that the Saudi nuclear program is committed to transparency and collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Additionally, the value of unexplored underground resources is estimated to exceed $2.5 trillion, reflecting the Kingdom’s efforts to lead the future of clean energy and advanced technology.
