New York schools are preparing to implement a new system to address the chronic absenteeism crisis. Data indicates that approximately 33% of students missed 10% or more of school days during the 2024-2025 academic year. The plan involves assigning staff members, such as teachers and social workers, as coordinators to combat absenteeism, with the goal of engaging with families and providing psychological support and resources necessary to bring students back to the classroom. This initiative comes after a 2024 lawsuit filed by families of students with disabilities, who accused schools of failing to provide adequate resources for mental health issues and absenteeism related to disabilities. The chronic absence rate among students with disabilities was recorded at 43%. Experts believe that repeated absences threaten academic achievement and increase risks of dropout and social issues, although some critics argue that specialists should be involved instead of burdening teachers with an additional responsibility.
