Aden International Airport was targeted in six Houthi attacks during October. The attacks began with explosive-laden drones and ballistic missiles, and recurred on the 16th, 17th and 21st of the month, before Friday’s attack. One missile landed about 500 metres from an aircraft preparing to take off. The attacks prompted the airport’s evacuation and the diversion of a flight; no casualties were reported. Observers link the targeting of the airport to an attempt to exert pressure by threatening civil aviation. The escalation comes as clashes intensify, amid assessments that it is intended to make up for battlefield losses.
