Impact of extra time and penalties in World Cup
The article details the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup, explaining that victory is a prerequisite for continuing in the competition, with the elimination of point calculations and tiebreaker considerations. It notes that extra time, which lasts for 30 minutes divided into two halves, often impacts match results, as 71.23% of matches played during extra time experienced a change in score. Many matches proceed to penalty shootouts, with nearly half of the games that went into extra time ending that way. The article also mentions the rules governing extra time and penalty kicks and references the history of the golden goal system, which quickly settled some matches before the extra period concluded.
