Debate over VAR's role in Germany's World Cup exit
The German national football team lost to Paraguay on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a match that sparked widespread controversy over the disallowed goal of German player Jonathan Tah. The goal was canceled based on a decision by the video assistant referee (VAR), who considered there was an infringement by the Paraguayan goalkeeper. This decision sparked intense anger in Germany, with coach Julian Nagelsmann and expert refereeing analysts calling it a scandal, as they argued that the replay did not show any clear foul and that the use of VAR was unjustified. As a result, Germany was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.
