Gabon's star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announced his decision to cease representing the national team, citing experiences of insult and damage to his reputation following his exclusion and re-inclusion in the squad despite participating in the 2025 African Cup of Nations while injured. He also expressed his frustration over being held responsible for the team's failure in the tournament, which saw them eliminated in the group stage after three defeats, sparking strong reactions from the government and fans. Aubameyang, Gabon's all-time top scorer, stated that he has decided to stop playing internationally following the decision to disband the coaching staff, suspend the national team’s activities, and halt his participation with the team, after the national team's poor performance and failure in the tournament. He is now seeking to revive his career in Europe with Deportivo La Coruña and is participating in the qualifiers for the 2027 African Cup of Nations.
