The match between Real Madrid and Real Betis in the fourth round of La Liga was marked by intense controversy over the referee's decision to disallow a penalty for Real Madrid after Kylian Mbappe missed a chance to score an equalizer in the 92nd minute. The Real Madrid team demanded a re-take of the penalty due to Betis player Marc Bartra entering the penalty area before the kick was taken, a request the referee rejected after consulting with VAR. Despite this, the club's channel criticized the referee and called for the penalty to be retaken, pointing to evidence indicating Bartra's interference and his foot touching the penalty area line. They also criticized VAR's performance for not alerting the referee to the need for a retake, considering the decision unfair and reflecting clear refereeing mistakes.
