UEFA delivers fresh setback to Manchester City
Manchester City’s management faces a new legal dilemma in their attempt to contest their conviction for committing 114 violations related to false sponsorship deals between 2009 and 2018, aimed at inflating revenue by approximately 900 million GBP. Reports have revealed that the evidence submitted by the club to UEFA more than six years ago, which confirms that payments from sponsors such as Etihad Airways were directed by the Emirati government, may conflict with their current defense that the funds were legitimately provided by government entities and will not hinder their appeal. Additionally, Etihad Airways, the main sponsor of Manchester City, denied in 2015 that the Emirati government funded the sponsorship deals, complicating the club’s position before the court—especially since investigations showed that the evidence presented was not comprehensive. An independent committee will review the club’s appeal before the end of the year, in hopes of exonerating it from the charges. However, the situation remains complex, as accusations revolve around the use of government-backed funding to support sponsorship deals, which threatens the credibility of their defense and impacts the club’s reputation.
