UN supports American tennis player after racism
The United Nations Human Rights Office condemned the racist abuses faced by American tennis player Coco Gauff through social media following an incident during a match at the China Open. She was subjected to a wave of racist comments after protesting a billboard and after the referee reinstated a point following a video review. Despite winning the match, Gauff confirmed that she received threats and racist insults, especially after leaving the tournament. The Women's Tennis Association has been in contact with her team to offer support. Meanwhile, the UN called for action to combat racism and discrimination in sports, noting that Black female players are particularly targeted by such online attacks.
