FIFA Updates Disciplinary Rules After Balogun
The article concerns FIFA's amendment to Law 27 on Discipline, following criticism directed at it due to the automatic one-match suspension penalty imposed on American forward Folarin Balogun during the World Cup, which allowed him to play against Belgium in the Round of 16. Pascal Van Dam, the President of the Belgian Football Association and a member of the FIFA Council, confirmed that the proposed amendment will be presented for approval at the Council meeting in Doha in December, with the aim of clarifying the circumstances that allow the use of Article 27, ensuring no external interference in disciplinary procedures, and safeguarding the rights of associations to express their opinions. This comes in response to criticisms regarding the independence of disciplinary decisions. The amendments include an explanation of the exceptional circumstances justifying the use of the article, along with enhanced transparency in disciplinary processes.
