New league challenges MLS in US football
The USL (United Soccer League) is preparing to launch a new professional men's system in 2028, featuring three tiers: "USL Premier," "USL Championship," and "USL League One," with promotion and relegation between clubs based on their results. The aim is to enhance competitiveness and develop the sport in the United States. The new league will represent the pinnacle of men's competitions and operate independently from Major League Soccer (MLS), though it remains under the umbrella of the United States Soccer Federation. The league includes clubs from over 200 communities across 45 states and seeks to reach 20 clubs in both the first and second tiers, increasing the significance of matches and motivating teams to perform continually.
