The New York City Marathon on Sunday marks 50 years since adopting its route through the city’s five boroughs. Its inaugural 1970 edition was limited to four laps around Central Park. Around 60,000 runners are expected to take part, with more than two million spectators. Kenya’s Benson Kipruto will seek to retain the men’s title amid competition from Ethiopia’s Deresa Geleta and fellow Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor, among others. Sweden’s Andreas Almgren will make his debut in the race. In the women’s race, Kenya’s Helen Obiri is aiming for her second consecutive title after winning last year in a course-record time of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds. She will face compatriot Sheila Chepkirui and other competitors.
