The White House revealed that preventing Somali referee Omar Arten and Iranian officials from entering the United States was for legitimate reasons. It was reported that the decision to block them came after a background check on Arten, despite him holding a visa. Washington also denied entry to about 15 members of the Iranian team's administrative staff for security reasons. Officials confirmed that all players and coaches had been allowed entry, and that certain Iranian officials are barred for security concerns, with fears that some of those prohibited may be linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
