Visa and Mastercard companies have begun executing the first international card transactions in Syria, marking a significant step toward reconnecting the country with the global financial system after years of sanctions and isolation. The process was carried out in cooperation with the Lebanese Foster Bank and featured official participation from the Syrian president in the payment test, reflecting progress in providing international payment services in the country. This comes after the United States removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, opening the door for restored access to the financial system and increased investment opportunities, with companies intending to enable international visitors to use their cards during their visits.
