The Syrian Ministry of Education has decided to amend the executive instructions to allow the teaching of the Kurdish language in public and private schools in areas where the Kurdish population constitutes a significant percentage. The decision includes recognizing Kurdish as a national language, with two weekly classes allocated during the first two grades of study, and provides for the possibility of teaching subjects such as social studies, history, and geography in either Standard Arabic or Kurdish during a transitional period. The National Center has been tasked with developing Kurdish language curricula, and qualified Kurdish-speaking teachers will need to pass examinations to ensure proficiency before official teaching begins. The goal of this decision is to systematically and officially integrate Kurdish language instruction into the Syrian education system in predominantly Kurdish areas.
