The court in the German city of Koblenz has sentenced an 81-year-old man to life imprisonment after his conviction for the murder of American tourist Amy Lopez in 1994, when she was 24 years old. His identity was uncovered through recent DNA re-examination, leading to his arrest in February 2026 inside a nursing home. The case indicates that the suspect lured Lopez into an abandoned building, sexually assaulted her before killing her with nine stab wounds in a mysterious crime that remained unsolved for decades until police were able to crack it. The court ruled that the severity of the crime and the gravity of the defendant’s guilt make early release unlikely.
