Tunisia is experiencing a severe water crisis due to frequent outages and temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in some areas. The decline in bottled water availability in markets and the appearance of long queues at stores reflect the worsening situation, amid an increased reliance on packaged water, with per capita consumption reaching 241 liters annually in 2024, up from 225 liters in 2020. The crisis has been accompanied by fatalities among prisoners due to asphyxiation and heatstroke, as well as a deterioration of healthcare services. This raises questions about the causes of the crisis and the government measures to address it. Experts and politicians confirm that mismanagement of resources and a lack of preparedness to face heatwaves have contributed to the deteriorating situation.
