Damascus is no longer listed on the list of state sponsors of terrorism following the U.S. decision that has now come into effect, after a review process lasting 45 days. This classification came after decades of continuous listing since 1979, due to accusations of harboring armed Palestinian factions and supporting terrorism. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the decision reflects positive steps taken by the new Syrian government, while the Syrian Foreign Minister confirmed that removing the designation paves the way for economic investment and the reactivation of the international financial system. The lifting of the designation coincided with Visa announcing the completion of its first electronic transaction with their cards inside Syria, an important achievement that enhances the country's return to the global financial system and is a step toward improving the country's economic situation.
