Price disparity pressures Syrian farmers and consumers

Syrian markets face a significant gap between wholesale prices and the final retail prices for consumers. Farmers are suffering from low prices for some crops that fall below production costs, which puts pressure on them and affects their income. Meanwhile, consumers are experiencing rising prices for goods due to transportation costs and intermediaries. For example, the price of a kilogram of potatoes in the central market does not exceed 5,000 Syrian pounds, yet it exceeds 8,000 pounds in some other markets. An increase in supply is expected with the arrival of a new potato crop from the Werd Asal area. Additionally, prices for vegetables and other foods vary, and a key issue is the rise in prices that comes at the expense of consumers’ income, along with weak profit margins for farmers. Improving marketing channels, expanding export opportunities, and enhancing oversight are necessary to address these challenges.
