The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, threatened the United States with targeting American oil and gas companies in the region if Iranian oil tankers are subjected to American attacks. This came in response to statements made by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who threatened to destroy and sink Iranian oil tankers. The timing coincides with escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran since the outbreak of war in the region in February 2026, following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and mutual attacking operations, amid efforts to reopen the strait and halt military actions.
