WhatsApp Username Privacy and Risks
Meta has announced the launch of the "Username" feature on WhatsApp, with the goal of reducing reliance on phone numbers as the primary identifier for accounts. This enhances user privacy and allows users to communicate using a unique ID instead of their personal number. The feature, which is similar to platforms like Telegram and X, enables users to search for and connect through an alternative digital identity, thereby lowering the risks of user tracking and targeted spam messages. However, this technology could also open the door to increased fraudulent activities, such as identity theft and phishing attacks, as verification becomes less dependent on the traditional phone number element. This places a greater burden on users to stay vigilant about security awareness.
