Google Gboard to add Sign Language conversion
Google has announced the development of a new feature for its Gboard keyboard for Android, called "Sign-to-Text," which allows translation of sign language into written text using the phone's camera and artificial intelligence technologies. The feature, which is still in the testing phase and not yet officially available, will utilize the phone's camera to track users' gestures and automatically convert them into text that can be inserted into messages, emails, or search queries. It relies on a hybrid processing system that combines on-device local processing with cloud processing, ensuring data privacy by deleting the data after the conversion is complete. It is expected to initially support American Sign Language (ASL) and may later expand to include other sign languages, aiming to improve accessibility for users who are deaf or hard of hearing. There is no official release date announced yet.
