The article reveals how Google utilized smartphone sensors, particularly the accelerometer, to transform users' phones into a network for early earthquake detection. This network can provide alerts before seismic waves reach the users. When the system detects a specific pattern of vibrations across a large number of phones in the area, alerts are sent out—sometimes before people actually feel the shaking. The timing depends on the speed of seismic wave propagation and the responsiveness of communication networks. The study shows that 85% of those who received the alerts felt the tremors indeed, with the potential to offer a few seconds of early warning to travelers. However, this is not pre-earthquake prediction; rather, it is an early warning system triggered after an earthquake has already started, leveraging the rapid travel of seismic waves.
