The article discusses the nomination of Costa Rican diplomat Rebeca Grynspan to succeed António Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations. She received strong support in a secret poll within the Security Council, which enhances her chances of becoming the first woman to hold the position. The article highlights that Grynspan has a strong legal background and is known for her advocacy of Palestinian rights, particularly through documenting the economic damages suffered by Palestinians as a result of the Israeli occupation, which amounted to an estimated loss of around $212.2 billion over 24 years. It also mentions that she enjoys widespread support but is expected to face significant opposition from some major powers. The piece concludes by noting that the selection process is taking place amid a legitimacy crisis and a decline in the influence of the international organization, with any candidate from countries with significant power being effectively vetoed.
