A team from Clemson University in the United States has developed a lightweight solar electric car called Deep Orange 17, capable of generating more than its daily energy needs for city transportation. The vehicle relies on over 1,700 photovoltaic cells that can provide enough power for a daily trip of about 12 miles, and it produces up to 31 miles of range on a sunny day. It features a distinctive design that allows the solar panels to maximize exposure to the sun. The total weight of the car is 550 kilograms, and it is primarily made from aluminum, carbon fibers, and 3D printing technologies, with a regenerative braking system. The project aims to explore the potential of solar energy to extend the range of electric vehicles, supported by BMW, but the car is not expected to enter commercial production in the near future.
